Luna Farms is a certified Monarch Waystation! This means that we provide resources necessary for monarchs to produce successive generations and sustain their migration in the fall. We also participate in Monarch Butterfly tagging, the data is used to determine the pathways taken by migrating monarchs, the influence of weather on the migration, their survival rate, etc! We reached a milestone this fall of tagging almost 200 monarchs with hopes they reach their wintering grounds safely and are able to initiate the journey back north for future generations to begin the magical process again. Two of the butterflies tagged here at the farm were recovered this winter in Mexico, in a Monarch Butterfly Preserve near Mexico City, It is hard to believe the journey these amazing insects take to get to their wintering grounds far from where they begin their life cycle.
Our property is certified by the North American Butterfly Association and are a certified Bee Friendly Farm.
Watch the video from my son-in-law, Thomas Grana, below to see part of our small pollinator project in full bloom!! The summer of 2018 was full of watering challenges and provided an opportunity to test the ability of the seed mix to not only grow, but produce flowers in drought conditions and continue until the first frost. The seeds purchased from American Meadows exceeded our expectations, they are 100% pure seeds that are Non-GMO and importantly Neo-nicotinoid free. We have been inspired by the diversity of insects and birds attracted to the wildflower area, that we have committed three acres for more wildflower plantings for our property in 2019.
